Nobody Hires A Photographer For The Photos alone. Here is why you really hire a photographer...
You think you’re shopping for photos. But is that really what you are purchasing?
stick with me for a second…
Picture this….you are scrolling through portfolios, comparing packages, reading reviews at midnight, trying to decide who’s “worth it”, and the whole time you think the thing you are evaluating is the photos themselves. Whether they are good. Whether they are your style. Whether that person can make you look the way you want to look.
But that’s not actually what you’re buying. Photos are just the receipt. What you’re really buying is a feeling, and if you don’t realize this going in, it’s easy to pick based on the wrong thing entirely and ultimately end up dissapointed.Â
Here’s what’s actually underneath every “yes” a client has ever given me.
You're buying confidence
Not confidence in a filter or an editing style. Not confidence in an angle you found once on Pinterest or the trending reel on Instagram. Confidence that comes from knowing you will look your best in your photos. Confidence that comes from working with someone who knows how to work with clients with varying looks and can help YOU look YOUR best. Confidence that comes with hiring someone who has experience with a variety of lighting situations and can execute on your vision. Ultimately, confidence that you will be spending your money wisely.
You're buying assurance
Nobody wants to stand in front of a camera not knowing what to do with their hands and body. The awkwardness people associate with “not being photogenic” almost never comes from how they look. It comes from not being told what to do next. A good photographer removes that guesswork so you are never standing there wondering if you’re doing it right because you are guided. Ultimately, you are paying for the assurance that it’s not all on you to show up and know what to do and that you won’t be left looking silly.Â
You're buying satisfaction
This one’s quiet, but it’s real. Somewhere in the decision, you are likely asking yourself, “will I feel good about this purchase in six months? In ten years?”  You are not just buying a service, you are buying the ability to look back and know you chose well and that the the money went toward something that held its value.
You're buying joy
Kids grow. Seasons end. Brands evolve. Whatever version of this moment exists right now will never exist again exactly this way. You had a vision for how it should be captured. Not just documented but done right. There is joy that comes with knowing the vision wasn’t just an idea in your head. It got executed, preserved, and handed back to you exactly as you pictured it. It’s joy that comes from an, all-around positive experience.Â
The photos are just proof that all of this was true.
Once you recognize this, the way you choose a photographer will likely change. You might find yourself no longer asking “do I like their editing style” or “are they the best deal” as the first questions. Instead, you might start asking a better question….
“Does this person make me feel confident, guided, and at ease before we’ve even started?”
Because that feeling has to exist first. The photos are just what’s left over once it does.
This kind of trust doesn’t start at your session. It starts the moment you find someone who makes you feel seen before you’ve even met them.
